elevated P44iq Sabato (“Sam”) Cogliano was born on June 6, 1919 and, after a remarkable life which began in Gesualdo, Avellino (Campania), Italy, he passed away peacefully and surrounded by the family he adored on November 2, 2019 in Richmond Hill, Ontario, five months after having celebrated his 100th birthday and 3 days after celebrating 70 years of marriage to his loving wife, Antonia. Born in the midst of the Spanish flu epidemic, he grew up during the Great Depression and as a young man was forced into World War II, during which he endured two years in a German prison camp until liberated by American troops. As a result of increasingly difficult economic times in post-war Italy, in 1953 he made the decision to leave his homeland with his pregnant wife and young daughter to seek a better life for his family in Canada. In the ensuing 66 years, his calm, caring and loving influence has served as constant source of inspiration, guidance and encouragement to his family. Nothing brought more joy to “Nonno Sabato” than watching his 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren succeed. He has touched many lives and will be greatly missed. Sabato is survived by his wife Antonia (neé Forgione), daughters Rosetta Fantauzzi (Antonio) and Rita Gallé (Pasquale), son Michael Cogliano (Mary), grandchildren Marc Fantauzzi (Laura), Michael Fantauzzi (Melissa), Cristina Fantauzzi, Jason Gallé (Angelica), Laura Calabrese (Antonio), David Cogliano and Alexandra Cogliano, great-grandchildren Matthew, Vania, Fiona, Mia and Siena, sister Assunta Guarino (the late Dario) and brother Gus Cogliano (Donna).

My deepest condolences to you and your family.
I am sorry for your loss. I did not know Mr. Cogliano, but I went to Oakwood Collegiate with Michael.
After reading the obituary, I thought about how remarkable Mr. Cogliano was to have overcome all those hardships and still manage to build a wonderful life for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Amazing!
And now Mr. Cogliano is in a place where he will have no more hardships. He can relax as he receives his rewards for a life well-lived.

My father-in-law’s life was truly remarkable. He was kind, gentle and he enjoyed food as much as I do. It makes me smile when I think of the antics of him and my father together on vacation or simply at the dinner table.
