SALVADOR APUYA SAN JUAN, JR.
Good afternoon everyone. Thank you all for being here today to honor my brother, Salvador San Juan, Jr. I am Susan San Juan Llanera, otherwise known as Susanah to him, his younger sister.
Kuya Jun, a beloved husband to Virgie, loving Father to his 3 children – Lourdes, Nanette and Junic – devoted Grandfather to his 5 grandsons and cherished brother to his 13 siblings.
Being a brother takes a lot of courage and strength. They love their sister more than anything and would do anything to make them happy. When I was growing up, each of my siblings had their own unique character trait. Kuya Jun was a hard-worker, even at a tender age. Without fail, with every chance he got, he would bring home a sweet delicacy for me – a dozen or two of “Hopia”,still fresh from the oven, as his “pasalubong” to me. I have no recollection if I ever shared them with my siblings or just ate them all. That thoughtful gesture is what I looked forward to most in a day, not because I got my favourite pasalubong, but because I felt how he was such a loving brother to me. We were blessed with such loving brothers.
Kuya Jun loved dancing and listening to music. He liked eating Chinese food, fried lumpia and turons. No matter where he went, he was always well-dressed. Did you know that Kuya Jun spoke different languages other than Bikol? He spoke Tagalog, English, French, Chinese and Arabic.
When he met Virgie, my Sister-in-Law, he was intrigued by her, because she would often talk to him in English rather than Tagalog. So, he surprised Gie and impressed her by speaking in French. That was the beginning of their beautiful courtship that led to a marriage. Gie, thank you for loving and caring for our brother, not only throughout your marriage, but especially in the last years of his life. Your sacrifices and commitment will not be forgotten.
In speaking with Nanette, I learned that he was passionate about going to church every week. He gave his absolute best to afford his kids the best possible future that he could provide. He would leave the safety and comfort of being at home to pick them up during a snowstorm or drive for hours on short notice to get to them. He was with Nanette when she knew it was time to give birth to Jacob. Pien was at work and she was almost on the verge of panic but her Papaâs calm nature got them safely to the hospital with a two year old Jericho in tow. He was a loving Lolo who was always willing to take care of his Apos. He was at his happiest when he saw his family happy and safe.
I will miss the times when he asked me to join him and Virgie for lunch, whenever he had a doctorâs appointment at East York Town Centre, which is across the street from my place. I will miss how his eyes would light up, with his big smile. This is how I will remember him. Though a piece of my heart is now left with a hole, just thinking about Kuya Jun will fill it with everything that he represented – love, kindness, gentleness and thoughtfulness.
There is a quote that says, “Life is the reason we are here. Love is the reason we stayâ. Brothers are a blessing. Being able to call Kuya Jun my brother is one of my blessings – the one who spread loads of love and happiness not only to his siblings but also to his own beloved family.
You are now in a good place in heaven and in the loving company of Mama and Papa. I will not say goodbye⌠but until we meet again Kuya Jun.
I love you!
Your sister,
Susan

It is with deep sadness to hear about Badongâs passing. Our deepest sympathy to Virgie and the whole San Juan family. May the good memories you shared give you the strength and peace at this time of sorrow.
Those we live donât go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear.
Take care Virgie and be strong. May he Rest In Peace.
Virginia: I was so sad to hear that Salvatore passed away. We got to know both of you at the Alzheimer Society and always enjoyed your company.
