elevated fCnMn Sylvia Pegis Santin died peacefully in her 82nd year, during the early hours of January 20, 2022, following a long illness, at Greenview Lodge Seniors Residence in Toronto. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Raymon, in 2017, and by their most cherished daughter, Marina, in 1993; she is survived by her son Neil. Born in Yonkers, New York, to Anton and Jessie Pegis, Sylvia was the oldest daughter of several children, including Gerard and Jessica of Toronto, and the first woman in her family to earn a PhD. She was a much-loved “Aunt Syl” to niece Tracey Santin Beaudry, who sadly passed away on the same day, husband Mike and their children Michelle and Matthew, as well as a score of nieces and nephews by marriage: most especially, Stephanie Wengert Watts, Alix Wengert and Adam Wengert, children of the late Marina Pegis Wengert and brother-in-law Robert Wengert, as well as Monica Pegis of Vancouver. She will be missed by many friends and colleagues, most especially Patrick Gallagher of Toronto, with whom she worked for the latter years of her working life, as writer and general editor of textbook series’ Fully Alive, and Many Gifts, used to this day by Catholic schools throughout Canada and internationally. She was previously employed by the Archdiocese of Toronto, and as General Secretary of the Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops. Thanks to all the wonderful healthcare providers, in particular, those of Greenview Lodge, who cared for her with such love and kindness during these past years, as well as Dr. Carole Cohen, and Yvonne Jones. Their help and support has been invaluable.
