elevated vuyBO It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Nevio Cantarutti at the age of 93 on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Beloved husband of 68 years to Diva Cantarutti (nee Faion). Cherished father of Gilbert and his wife Fulvia, Paul and his wife Grace. Caring and devoted Nonno to Alyssa (Jan), Dana (Mark), Andrew and Stephen. Proud Bisnonno of Olivia and Benjamin. Nevio will be missed by his niece Rosanna Bertolini, his extended family and a huge number of friends.
elevated vuyBO He was born in Hamilton, Ontario, at the height of the great depression. At the tender age of 6, his beloved mother passed away suddenly leaving an indelible loss that influenced the rest of his life. After a difficult time in Canada, his family moved back to Italy where they would then become exposed to the ravages of World War II with the all the hardships that would entail. A bright light for him in his early life was his “second mother”, Maria, who provided him with love and kindness. Despite his early challenges, his positivity and eternal optimism led him to return to Canada in 1948, at the age of 18, first settling in Kingston, Ontario, and ultimately in Toronto where he forged a beautiful life with his treasured wife and family. His unwavering dedication to his family, his craft and his community guided him in everything he did. He radiated love everywhere.

A light has gone out of our lives. A sweet and loving man has left us. He did not just marry Diva, but he married her entire family. He welcomed all of us into his heart and we will miss him. Much love to Diva, Gil, Paul, and their families.

Nevio was bestman and Diva maid of honor at my parents, Lina and Silvano Onisto, wedding and remained good friends and travel buddies through the years. We are saddened to hear of his passing but know that his spirit will live on in his children, Gilbert and Paul, and their families. Death is always untimely and unwelcome, that is its nature. The important factor to consider is how well a life is lived in the time we are given. Nevio lived a full life loved by friends and family. He experienced the wreckage of a war-torn country to make a life in a new country not particularly friendly to new immigrants. He did it with honest hard work and courage and made a life for his family and legacy for his children and grandchildren. He was my father’s best friend and his best man when he married in 1952 and Nevio and Diva became my godparents when I was born. I remember so many occasions we would get together in the early days and there would be laughter and good food and plenty of wine and stories. There were so many hardships he faced but that never tainted his outlook on life. Nevio worked hard all his life and never complained because he took his strength from the love of his wife Diva, his family and friends. He overcame his obstacles with patience, hard work and a good sense of humour and created the environment in which he saw his family would flourish. We extend our deepest condolences to Diva, Gilbert and Paul and all their families for their loss but celebrate in our hearts an extraordinary example of a full life well lived and well remembered by all whose lives he touched.
